Also located in Chimney Rock State Park, this particular entrance proved to be much more challenging than Sliding Rock. It was much, much higher up the cliff, requiring herculean efforts on the part of our state employees and volunteers to move equipment and materials. Even at the entrance, work space was very limited. But we had a great team, and got the job done much more quickly than we anticipated. Stout work makes for a stout gate! All photos © Jim Kennedy.

Looking out, we see Lydia welding the first column to the sill.
Jim drills a hole for an anchor pin for the second column. The cross bar at the top is only temporary.
The hangers and horizontal bars go up rather quickly.
She’s almost finished now!
I couldn’t quite step back far enough to get the entire gate in view from the outside, but this gives you a pretty good idea.
