Johnson Cave, Jackson County, Kentucky

August 2023

Gate Types: SEMI-CUPOLAS

Big-eared bats are rare in the eastern U.S., so it is very important to protect the known roosts. Both entrances to this site (a fact that aids in chimney-effect air flow and gives the cave the appropriate range of temperatures) now have nice semi-cupolas protecting them. This is important because the entrances can be seen from the nearby county road. Many thanks go to the private landowner that allowed us to protect his cave. All photos © Jim Kennedy.

We first attached a long header to the overhanging rock wall to give us a level spot for future measurements.
There was a great deal of difficulty working around trees and boulders, but still creating adequate flight space.
We had a good team, and work went quickly, despite the oppressive heat and humidity.
The nearly-finished gate on the main entrance.
The view from the other end. It was impossible to find a place to stand to photograph the entire gate.
And the beautiful gate over the second entrance, which is narrower and steeper.
