Ausable Mine, Clinton County, New York

August 2022

Gate Type: BASIC

A remote site means a more difficult project, and this was no exception. We were unable to have an advance site visit, and so we estimated the project based on a couple of photos and some rough measurements. Unfortunately, the best location for the gate ended up with it being twice as large as we originally planned. That meant that we had to order more steel mid-project, work longer hours, and have our only cost overrun ever. Fortunately, the client was understanding and covered the extra expenses. Initial site visits are definitely the way to go. All photos © Jim Kennedy.

Poor rock quality meant that we had to move the gate in a bit from the dripline, but that made a much larger gate.
It was tough taking photos because of the welding haze.
Our welder Amber has to hang out in weird positions.
To be a bat gate welder, you need to be part gymnast.
We use plank scaffolding to reach the highest parts of the gate.
This is the best photo we got of the finished gate.
