Johnson Cave, Jackson County, Kentucky
August 2023
Gate Types: SEMI-CUPOLAS
Big-eared bats are rare in the eastern U.S., so it is very important to protect the known roosts. Both entrances to this site (a fact that aids in chimney-effect air flow and gives the cave the appropriate range of temperatures) now have nice semi-cupolas protecting them. This is important because the entrances can be seen from the nearby county road. Many thanks go to the private landowner that allowed us to protect his cave. All photos © Jim Kennedy.
