Beans Cave, Frederick County, Virginia

December 2015

Gate Type: BASIC

Privately-owned Beans Cave was gated because the owners were experiencing trespassing issues, an all-too-common problem these days. To maximize the flight space for bats, we did not install the gate at the restricted sinkhole entrance, but rather just inside, where the passage widened significantly. We could not have done this project without the help of all the caver volunteers who participated. All photos © Jim Kennedy except the first, © Wil Orndorff.

Looking out the rubble slope and former stairs to the constricted entrance. Not a good place for a gate.
It was impossible to get a clear view of the entire finished gate.
The left side was particularly tricky, being built against a flowstone slope. But it turned out just great!
